A problem-solving task defines a problem which the business is facing, and the method to solve this problem has not yet been discovered. The business has a knowledge gap to solve the problem.

The purpose of designing this type of task is to generate possible solutions from Crowdholders, and close the knowledge gap which the business currently has.

According to the information or the knowledge you want to acquire, there are 3 types of problem-solving tasks. They are tasks for facts, tasks for personal opinions or preferences and tasks for reasoned judgments. (Please keep in mind, a problem-solving task is often the mixture of mentioned 3 subtypes.)

Tasks for facts

Tasks for facts can help you to gather important existing information or facts which you do not know yet, and these facts might be crucial for your business. 

For example, you may want to expand your business to Country X. However, you do not know any business regulation there. So you may design a task as "What are the business regulations for foreigners in Country X?"

Tasks for personal opinions

Tasks for personal opinions can help you to discover Crowdholders’ subjective view of certain elements in your project. It can help you to understand the customer expectation and the user experience.

Tasks for reasoned judgments

Tasks for reasoned judgment require Crowdholders to solve problems with their reason, logic, statistics, scientific methods or other reliable ways for conducting a proper research.

It can be a open-ended question, or a fix-alternative question (yes or no; A or B). You have to emphasise in the task, that Crowdholders should give you answer based on reason or evidence.
